Essential Cheap Earthquake Kit
The following list is compact, cheap and lightweight, all which you need if you are trying to grab a kit during an emergency disaster. You can have this in a spare backpack and keep in easy access.
- a dozen dust masks, as dust from buildings collapsing will be ongoing.
- 50.00 or more cash, as ATMs will be down.
- container moistened towelettes to wash wounds, wipe dust off glasses and eyes
- roll of toilet paper
- a small knife
- a few candles and matches
- a dozen light sticks, handier than battery operated flashlights as those run out. Light sticks are cheap and will last for about 12 hours once activated.
- a bottle of water and water purification tablets
- extra sweater, jacket and t-shirt
- package of biscuits and hard candy
- bottle of whiskey – you can disinfect with this, barter with this, and have a ready-made pain killer on hand.
- band aids
- roll of string
- safety pins
-duct tape
- Tylenol as headaches are going to be ongoing
- a t-shirt can be used as a tourniquet, a sling, torn into strips for first-aid and more.
- extra items could be some chocolate and pop, both adding some quick energy
- a deck of cards for those days at a shelter passing the time.
- sanitary napkins for women. If nothing else, they make good band aids.
- extra pair of walking shoes ideal but not necessary
- pair of rubber gloves, pair of cloth gloves
Diseases will start spreading more quickly during disasters, so keeping as clean as possible is important and will take some effort. Obviously this kit does not include essentials like medications you need and passports, id, etc., but it is important for a kit like this to be at home with another duplicate one at the office. If you have one for every family member, you are doing even better. Keep in an easily accessible place, which may make it easier to find during an earthquake.
